Keeping a journal isn’t just for teenagers that are trying to sort out their intense emotions and hormones as they go through the trying years of middle and high school (oh, the good ‘ol days)

There are many ways journaling can benefit adults, too. Everyday, we try our best to juggle our jobs, tasks, responsibilities, family, bills, stress, and the like. Journaling can help us sort through all the noise and organize our thoughts.

Effective journaling can improve your quality of life. We are able to organize our tasks for better time management

BENEFITS OF KEEPING A JOURNAL

1. Journaling clears your mind

We go through hundreds of different thoughts throughout the day. It’s no wonder why a lot of people feel burnt out by information overload. Journaling allows us to write down our thoughts, ideas, habits, patterns, plans, and schedules so we can clear our minds of them.

2. Ease anxiety and relieve stress

Journaling is a form therapy. If you don’t feel like venting to a counselor or to your friends about the things that are stressing you out, writing in a journal is the next best thing. It allows you to release your anxious thoughts onto paper so that they are no longer filling up space in your mind. Brew a cup of hot calming lavender tea and start writing.

3. It’s private and you’re the only one that has access to it

Unless you want them to, no one else has access to your journal. Your private thoughts are safe as no one can read your journal without your permission, nor can it be hacked from a distance. And let’s be real – there’s nothing more mortifying than having your private details blasted all over the internet for the world to see.

4. Keep a record of your significant memories

Facebook and Instagram are great tools for keeping memories, but keeping a journal gives these memories a personal touch. You are able to tell the story of these memorable moments through your perception and display physical memorabilia you’ve gathered throughout the years. Writing down significant memories is a good way to relive our most precious moments.

5. It helps you remember things accurately

There is an old Chinese proverb that says, “the faintest ink is better than the sharpest memory”. It is permanently etched in my brain to remind me to write things down so I won’t have to rely on (faulty) memory alone. How many times have we told ourselves, “Oh I don’t need to write that down, I’ll definitely remember it,” and then surely forget it? I know I’m definitely guilty of doing that once . . . or 10 times before.

6. It keeps track of your goals

It’s a rewarding feeling to be able to achieve your goals, no matter how small or big they are. Having a visual reminder of your goals keeps them in the forefront of your mind and keeps you focused on what’s important.

7. It helps you stay focused and organized

Writing down your list of things to do helps you to remember them so nothing falls through the cracks. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing all of the items on your ‘to-do’ list crossed off.

8. You can explore your thoughts

Another reason I started journaling is to practice free-writing. Free writing is a technique  in which one writes about any topic continuously for a certain amount of time without worrying about spelling or grammar rules. Who knows what you might discover if you allow your thoughts to flow freely.

9. It keeps a record of your brilliant ideas

One of the best things about journaling is that it is for all types of people – writers, artists, students, musicians, planners – you know name it. As a blogger, I always have random ideas popping up in my head about possible blog post topics. Usually when that happens, I grab my journal and write down the topic and a bulleted list of supporting information. It makes writing the actual blog post easier as I already have an outline of what I want to it to be.

10. It helps with problem-solving and critical thinking

If you find yourself at the crossroads of a situation, bullet journaling can help you make a decision. Writing out your problems and possible solutions helps you work through them better. You can list down the pros and cons, and lay out all the details before you make that final decision.
